On to Albuquerque

Next week is the annual Wild West History association Conference in Albuquerque (pictured here circa 1890) which I will be attending. Looking forward to seeing some historians I really respect, like John Boessenecker, and some people in the community whose company I enjoy, Like Janelle Molony and Matt Bernstein. Only wish I had more time and money so I could be more involved with this group.

This year I will be presenting a paper of the Stein’s Pass Train Robbery of 1888. My specialty is Arizona Territorial history, and the theme was New Mexico history. I didn’t think I had anything I could give them until I remembered this story. It is odd, because the crime was committed in the New Mexico Territory, but it was Arizona officers who gave chase to the bandits, following them into Mexico. This turned out to be a big mistake on the part of U, S, Territorial Marshal William Kidder Meade. In his haste to apprehend the robbers and claim the reward, Meade neglected to inform the Mexican authorities, and

he and his posse were arrested and jailed for entering Mexico without permission and with arms. Meade and his men would spend two weeks in captivity in Janos. When they were finally released, the Mexican officials kept their guns and horses.

It was Southern Pacific detective Robert “Bob” Paul, who would replace Meade as the U. S. Territorial Marshal, who finally ran the robbers to ground, though his posse killed them rather than bringing them in alive.

Anyway, this is a short entry, as I have much to do to prepare for the Conference. I think en route, we will visit Canyon Diablo and Holbrook, so I may shoot some footage for upcoming videos. In the future, I hope to add some short films to my YouTube page based on stories I have written, starting with the killing of John Shaw and his infamous final drink.
